Are you planning to install LED strips but feeling overwhelmed by the technicalities? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! LED strips require a power supply device to convert the high voltage from your wall socket into the suitable voltage for the LED strips. In this simple and stress-free 3-step guide, we’ll help you choose the ideal power supply for your LED strip project.

Step 1: Determine the Voltage of the LED Strip
Before diving into the nitty-gritty, it’s crucial to know the voltage requirement of your LED strip. Most LED strips available in the market run on either 12V DC or 24V DC.

In the case of the WenTop Waterproof LED Strip Lights SMD 3528, you can find the voltage information in the product description and specifications. Additionally, you can look at the product photo for a mark indicating 12V or 24V.

Ensure that the power supply’s voltage matches that of the LED strip. In this example, both the LED strip and the power supply are rated at 12V, making them a perfect match.

Step 2: Determine the Power Draw of the LED Strip
Next, you need to find the wattage (W) or amperage (A) specifications of the LED strip. It may be listed as per meter (W/m or A/m) or simply as a total value (W or A).

For the WenTop LED strip, the total wattage is mentioned as 24 Watts, which translates to 4.8 Watts per meter. By using the formula P = V x A, where P is the wattage, V is voltage, and A is amperage, we can calculate that the amperage is approximately 2.0 Amps.

Now, let’s check the power supply. In this case, the power supply is rated at 36W, or 3A, which is suitable for a 12V LED strip.

Here’s the important part: the power supply’s rating indicates its capacity to provide power, but it doesn’t mean it will supply that much power constantly. The power supply will adjust its output based on the connected load. As long as the LED strip’s power draw doesn’t exceed the power supply’s capacity, you’re good to go.

Therefore, this power supply can be safely used to power any LED strip that draws between 0 Watts and 36 Watts.

Step 3: Determine the Connection Method
The power supply usually comes with a power connector specified as 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm. Pay attention, as a different size like 5.5 mm x 2.5 mm may not work with LED strip plugs.

Check if your LED strip reel comes with a DC plug that matches the power supply plug. If so, you can directly connect the power supply to the LED strip.

However, if your LED strip has two bare wires (typically red and black) or if you plan to cut the strip into multiple segments, you’ll need an adapter to connect the power supply to the LED strip. Wire the loose ends of the LED strip into the adapter, which should then plug into the power supply.

With these three simple steps, you can confidently choose the right power supply for your LED strip project.

Now that you’re well-equipped with the knowledge to make an informed decision, it’s time to bring your LED strip project to life and add a touch of mesmerizing illumination to your space!
