In response to fan feedback, Borderlands 4 narrative director Sam Winkler has confirmed that the upcoming game will tone down its reliance on memes and toilet-based humor, which became a hallmark of Borderlands 3. Fans of the series have expressed concern over the excessive use of these elements in the previous title, and it seems Gearbox is looking to course correct for Borderlands 4.

During a recent social media interaction, Winkler acknowledged that while Borderlands 4 will still maintain its humor, the game will move away from the over-the-top meme culture and crude toilet humor that some felt overshadowed the gameplay in Borderlands 3. Winkler also teased that while there might still be toilets in the game, they won't be the same "skibidi" variety fans encountered before.

While the Borderlands 4 trailer shown at The Game Awards 2024 gave fans a glimpse of new factions, villains, and the four Vault Hunters, many are still curious about the overall tone of the game. Some fans expressed concerns about a darker tone, but Winkler assured that the franchise’s signature humor will remain a key part of the experience—just with a more balanced approach.

As the 2025 release date approaches, fans are still eager to learn more about the game, including the mysterious new villain, The Timekeeper, and more details on the four Vault Hunters.
